Abiding in God
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.
John 15:4, 9
To “abide” means to “live in” or “dwell”. It can also mean to wait, to stay. When Jesus tells us to abide in him, it’s means all of that and more. It is putting our everything in him, knowing him, resting in him, remaining by his side. In fact, other translations render “abide” as “remain” or “stay”. Some even say “live”. Really, “live” seems quite accurate. It is our complete self, becoming one with his complete self. It is becoming fully who we are as created by him. It is a forever rest from striving for perfection, from trying to do it on our own. So to abide is to remain his disciple, to dwell with him, to stay by his side: to live with him, for him, and in him. If we seek him and find him, we’ll abide in him too.
